Packaging Glass Items

Sending any glass items through the post can be enough to make you worry about their condition, until they arrive safely at their intended destination. Whether you’re moving house or sending items to a friend or family member, glass or partially glass items are among the top products prone to damage. In the latest blog post, Eclipse Distribution Solutions Ltd discusses top tips for packaging your fragile items, helping them to arrive safely and without damage.

As with shipping any item, you must ensure that you have the correct materials to send it. It is always advisable to send items in a new cardboard box, however, if you are unable to get your hands on a new box, an old one in good condition may be used, alongside good quality packing tape to reinforce the strength of the box.

Firstly, you will want to wrap each glass or partly glass item you are sending, individually in paper. Be sure to wrap fully and tightly around each item. If you are sending items such as cups or bowls that have space between each side, be sure to stuff the inside of the item with newspaper as well.

Once covered, you will want to use bubble wrap to further protect the item. There is no limit on the amount of bubble wrap you can use, so use as much as you need to, depending on the size, weight and fragility of the item.

Once you have layered your item in both newspaper and bubble wrap, use tape and cling film to keep the bubble wrap tight and in place throughout transit. Multiple tight layers should help to prevent the item from moving around and lessen the likelihood of it being broken.

Before you place your goods inside the cardboard box, line the box with bubble wrap (stuck down with packaging tape) and fill with a generous amount of packaging peanuts. When you place your products inside the box, they should fit snugly and not be able to move around. To test how much room the items have to move inside the box, hold the lid closed and shake the box, if you hear movement, go ahead and fill with more packaging material.

Sealing your box is the next important step, before sending your items. Be sure to place strong tape along the central seam of the box, as well as across it for further protection.
